OMA opens new office in Hong Kong

Hong Kong, 5 October 2009 – In addition to its headquarters in Rotterdam and offices in Beijing and New York, the Office for Metropolitan Architecture opens a new office in Hong Kong this week to direct a growing number of projects in the region.

OMA Hong Kong will act as a platform for research and design, and will execute several projects, including:

West Kowloon Cultural District – a large-scale conceptual masterplan aiming to establish Hong Kong as a centre for arts and culture
Taipei Performing Arts Centre – design development of OMA's competition-winning scheme for new theatre complex in the heart of Taipei
Shenzhen Stock Exchange – ongoing construction of the 200,000m2 headquarters for trading in China’s technology sector, scheduled for completion in 2011

OMA Hong Kong will have a staff of approximately 25 architects and urban planners, and will be managed by David Gianotten, who joined OMA in 2008. Gianotten has previously overseen numerous projects and competitions from Rotterdam, including the Shenzhen Stock Exchange, a masterplan for Hanoi, and the design competition for the International Criminal Court in The Hague. Gianotten will work closely with OMA partners Rem Koolhaas and Ole Scheeren.

OMA Hong Kong will be temporarily located in the Cheung Kong Centre in the offices of McKinsey Hong Kong, before moving to its new office space in Hong Kong Central in early November.

OMA's Beijing office, led by Ole Scheeren, will continue to operate as OMA’s Asian headquarters.
